InTASC Standard: Standard #8: Instructional Strategies. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways (InTASC, 2013).
Brief Description of Evidence: As part of my EDUC 240 Intro to Physical and Health Education for Teachers course during the fall semester of 2016, I worked collaboratively to create a fourth grade lesson plan that involved a literacy standard and included a physical education component. The learners identified synonyms and antonyms in their
everyday life by actively participating in a physical activity.
Analysis of What I Learned: I learned how to work together with peers in order to come up with an effective lesson plan that enhances the learner’s prior knowledge. I learned how to integrate two subjects together and teach them both at the same time while connecting the content. When revising the lesson plan, I learned how to listen to criticism and apply what I was told into making the lesson build the learners skills better. I learned to see the connection with the lesson plan and Lev Vygotsky’s theory of social development, as I acted as the most knowledgeable other. I saw how they worked within their own zones of proximal development as they worked with one another to create stories.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard: My competence in this standard is proven by my ability to understand the importance of collaboration with peers and how that collaboration deepens learning. The learners collaborated with one another to create a story and through that collaboration they increased their understanding of the content. The learners engaged in a literary activity that allowed them to be active learners while they were doing a physical activity. By creating a lesson plan that integrates both literacy and physical education I was able to implement a cross-curricular learning experience for the students. This allowed me to present the information in a manner that would identify the meaningful connections between lesson content and the real world. It is important that learners know when to use synonyms or antonyms because they can apply that knowledge when comparing or contrasting things in every subject that they learn.
